Pre-shopping advice
Oriental Carpets or Rugs (which describes the smaller of the two) are perhaps one of the most sensual forms of fine art ever produced. Suffused with rich color, elaborate design and luxurious texture a good Oriental Carpet almost begs to be unrolled, stroked and admired.
While Oriental carpets have long been associated with the palaces of pashas and estates of the elite, today's buyers can find stunning carpets at a wide variety of prices. Whether you are looking for that spectacular, one-of-a-kind showpiece to complete your collection or a smaller rug to add a touch of cozy character to your home. Oriental carpets are an investment that begins paying off the minute you welcome them into your home.
Our customers tell us again and again that; once you place a Oriental Carpet on your floor, you won't go back to modern machine carpets!
Of course not all Oriental Carpets are not created equal, and selecting the good ones often takes time and practice. Some Carpets are hand-tied wool and silk, while others are churned out by machines and may have synthetic fibers. The prices, too, can vary considerably, ranging from £40 for small tribal rug to £100,000's and above for the rarest pieces. Learning which oriental rugs you like, and which ones are good investments provides a glimpse into the history and culture that swaths the globe stretching from Turkey through Persia and into India and China.
There are five main criterias when considering to purchase your Carpet , the age, quality of workmanship, country of origin, overall condition and most importantly if the carpet actually appeals to you.
An important distinction when buying an Oriental Carpet is the method of production. A true Oriental rug is one that has been knotted by hand. Machine-made rugs, while often beautiful in their own right, are not technically "Oriental Carpets or Rugs." Instead, they are referred to as "Oriental design." This is not allways pointed out by vendors trying to sell them to you so beware and be sure to inspect the back of the carpet closely, checking for the loop of the knot and the pattern which should be visible on the back is good a start.
Even if an Oriental Carpet has been hand-made, it is not necessarily a collectible or quality item. A visit to most fly by night operators at your local village hall will reveal stacks of what we call "decorative carpets" these are true Oriental Carpets made by hand but nonetheless items which have been mass-produced typically by workers in rug factories from India or China. While many of these rugs are described by the name of the Persian Rugs they seek to emulate and sold to the unaware customer as true oriental carpets, few are actual examples of these much more valuable rugs. It is therfore important to ascertain where in actual fact the rug was actually produced, be sure to ask as many questions as you like about the carpets as any honest trader will welcome this will only be to pleased to answer.
While many people may well be satisfied with decorative carpets in the short term, collectors or those who know better tend to steer well clear because they are not the real thing and therfore less likely to appreciate in value than say a genuine Persian Carpet. They also tend to lack character and fail to please the eye when looked at for amount of time. This is due in part to the use of lesser quality materials, such as low grade and chemically-dyed wool and lack of true artisian pride and enjoyment throughout the creation process.
Most Oriental rugs can be categorised as belonging to one of five broad geographic groups; Persian, Turkish, Turkmen, Caucasian and Chinese. Within these groups, their our subdivisions typically taking the the name of the city, or the tribe that produced them, hence giving us such designations as Baluch and Herez carpets.
Oriental rugs can also be categorized according to the method of production. The lowest level, so-called "tribal" rugs, are often relatively small rugs made for personal use by local weavers. Village-produced rugs can be similar, but with broader experimentation in design and coloring, while rugs produced in city workshops are frequently made according to a set pattern designed for maximum market appeal.
